HARMONY OF THE INTERTWINED
Performance
The work explores the dynamics of human relationships and the potentially limiting nature of intimacy. The choreography traces stages of connection: curiosity, growing closeness, synchronisation, and eventual restriction. The red thread embodies the relationship itself—initially loose and open, gradually tightening and tangling over time.
The semi-transparent fabric surrounding the performers represents the shared “bubble” two people create—a private space that both protects and isolates. The projected shadows reflect the image presented outward to others, simultaneously concealing and revealing. When the fabric falls, this constructed boundary dissolves, exposing the inner reality of the relationship to the audience.
Under the best conditions we are inviting an active audience to walk around and observe with their own pace and perspective.
Performance description
Two performers begin seated on opposite sides of a cube, each with a red thread tied around their wrist. Following the thread into the cube, they carefully touch the suspended ropes, triggering soft sounds. As they grow more familiar with the space, their movements expand and the sound intensifies. They notice each other, freeze, and begin to interact—sharing ropes and gradually synchronising their movements. What starts as subtle mirroring grows into larger, dynamic gestures. As they become more entangled, their range of motion decreases while the volume increases. Eventually, they are fully restricted and freeze again. One performer realises they are not truly stuck but have remained “trapped” to stay connected. The synchronisation breaks. They untie the red thread from the wrist of the performer who is not entangled, who then exits the cube. The thread is placed back at its starting point, and the surrounding fabric drops, revealing the remaining performer suspended in the ropes. The sound becomes constant as the audio and projection slowly fade out.
